Some Trenton Residents Call Foul on Smell Coming from Riverview Landfill

Residents from different parts of Trenton weigh in on the smell, or lack there of, coming from the Riverview Land Preserve.

On Tuesday, Trenton Patch posted a question on Facebook asking residents if they've smelled an unpleasant odor coming off the Riverview Land Preserve recently, and we received over 20 responses.

The above map plots out the streets in red and blue flags where residents are complaining about a foul smell coming from the landfill (red flags) and streets where residents said they smell nothing at all (blue flags).

The black flag indicates the location of the landfill.

Many residents living in the area surrounding King Road between Allen Road and Fort Street said they have noticed an increase in odor lately. Some of these residents also said the smell happens year-round and is worse in the summer.

Two residents complained that their children were gagging because of the smell.

A resident living near Van Horn and Fort Street said he doesn't smell anything. The same goes for two residents on Pinetree Drive. The same street where a different resident complained of smelling the landfill "occasionally."

Here are comments some residents made on the Trenton Patch Facebook page about the landfill:

  • Jessica Marie Arend: Not lately as I moved in the fall. But I used to live on King Road and in the summer with the heat the smell was horrible!!!!
  • Tracy White Loger: I live on Pinetree and do not smell it, but I have friends that live up Harrison a few blocks, and they said it is terrible.
  • Sam Sawnick: I live on pinetree as well and we occasionally smell it, but for my parents on Churchill, it's disgusting, especially if the wind is going. But I wouldn't say "lately" because it has been like that for a while.
  • Kathye Quirk: Been on Greenview for 20 years and it was never bad until recently. Smells like going over the Rouge Bridge.
  • Jen McConnell: It is awful some days! Ugh!
  • Trudy Mason: I moved to Trenton about a year-and-a-half ago. The smell here is TERRIBLE. Sometimes it smells like garbage, other times like sulfur. I have heard it is the quarry??? Others have said it's the dump on King Road. At times it is so bad my 8-year-old son actually gags. I live in the area of King and Fort. Is there anything that can be done? I honestly don't know how much longer I can stand it.
  • Bob Papp: Yes, on and off for the last month or so. It's terrible!
  • William Pope: I'm on Fort Street north of Van Horn. No smells here.
  • Ananas Comosus: Tracy, I live on Pinetree, too! Had my husband hop outside, can't smell it.
  • Jema McCardell: I live on Birchwood, never had sediment, but whew the smell on hot and/or humid days...blech. On Monday my toddler was gagging at the smell when she got out of the car after preschool.

If you want to offer some insight into which parts of Trenton are affected by the Riverview Land Preserve, please take our poll. Don't forget to comment on the article with the name of your street, how often you notice the smell and its intensity.

What I want to know is, is the smell coming from the landfill or the quarry?
So many people in different areas have complained, so i'm curious. Who's to blame. Never been this bad in the years I've lived here and thats been about 27 years.
Last night I smelled it. Smelled like sulfur.

I stay on Douglas and King, the smell is bad. I though they were to close the landfill back in 1995. Someone got paid-off. The birds are also horrible.

I drive through there for 16 years on my way to work. This past 6 months was the only time I noticed the smell and it is bad. I am gagging in my car. I drive King Rd. from Allen to Fort. The smell starts around Grange and ends around Cousineau Chiropractic. I think of all the people in that retirement housing development. I would be very irate if I lived in those no outlet streets of nice houses off the park. Why do we take in trash from Canada????? A few people make money and our whole community has to suffer. We are like the literal toilet to these rich folk.
