Trenton City Administrator Confident in Budget Proposal

City officials will present the 2012-13 budget proposal to Trenton City Council members for approval on May 21.

One of the strongest points in the 2012-13 budget proposal is the fact that there are no lay offs according to Trenton City Administrator Jim Wagner. The budget proposal will be presented to Trenton City Council members for approval on May 21 at Trenton City Hall. Wagner said city officials and council members were able to come to an agreement on several issues, resulting in a balanced budget at a public budget hearing Monday night. "We worked together as a team," Wagner said. "Mayor Pro-tem (Terrence Teifer) did a very commendable job in bringing all of us together." The budget requires taking $250,000 from the fund balance, but Wagner said the important thing is that people get to keep their jobs. "We made some general fund assumptions …

Sulfur Levels Spell Disaster for Splash Park at Elizabeth Park

Wayne County has new plans for the highly-anticipated Splash Park at Elizabeth Park.

The highly anticipated Splash Park at Elizabeth Park will not be completed as planned according to Beverly Watts, director of Wayne County Parks. Watts said sulfur levels in nearby well water were "too high for our liking." "The safety of the people is our primary concern," Watts said. Construction crews drilled and tested a number of different areas for clean well water, but did not find water with sulfur levels low enough to be used safely. Instead, the newly cemented area will be covered with a pavilion for picnic tables and benches, according to Watts. "We think it's wonderful, and we didn’t have to pay any more money to get this done," Watts said when asked about the change in plans. "We are very excited that we could go to plan 'B,' …

As ridiculously wasteful, and puzzlingly incompetent this is, I have to admit that I'm personally glad that it won't be finished. I wasn't looking forward to the increased vehicle and pedestrian traffic that would have resulted. At least there is still the Kennedy center. It isn't free, but you get a lot more room to enjoy yourself, and it seems to have a portion of the pool fit for every age and…   more ›

Council Members Approve Pay Cuts, Increased Healthcare Costs

Trenton City Council members voted in favor of salary reductions and increased health care costs for non-union city employees Monday night.

The changes affect 31 current employees. Also, a number of retirees, whose benefits mirror the most current employee health care costs, will be affected by the increase. "I didn't have a clue that that was going to be presented last night," Stack said. "I was a little shocked when it was brought up to be voted on." Stack added the changes had been discussed in several previous budget study sessions, but was not aware Councilman Tim Taylor would be asking council members to vote last night. Taylor made a motion to …

Keech, I believe that there are money pits in Trenton that Council should be addressing first! Everyone knows that the Ice Rink costs the City close to a million every year, it is not a self sustaining service, as well as the Transfer Station. Administration had a budget that BALANCED without taking ANY cuts from any employees! City employees, especially non-management, are already underpaid …   more ›

The hearing is slated for 7:30 p.m. May 21 at Trenton City Hall. "For the sake of the public, obviously many of our study sessions are not attended by the public or televised, but just to give an idea where we're at," Mayor Pro-Tem Terrence Teifer said. "We've spent the last month-and-a-half working on the budget that was prepared by administration and the council's been through all of the departments...this is probably one of the most difficult budget times I've ever been involved with particularly as a councilperson." The city is facing a $3.1 million budget shortfall, and cuts must be made …
