Public Hearing for New Bullying Policy Tonight

The Trenton Board of Education is holding a public hearing for a new bullying policy being introduced to the district tonight.

Members of the Trenton Board of Education will kick off Monday's regularly scheduled meeting with a public hearing regarding a new policy prohibiting bullying. The meeting and public hearing begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Board of Education building on the campus of Trenton High School. District administrators are planning on introducing a new policy that is much more elaborate and specific, to protect students from bullying. The new policy goes beyond the current bullying policy by including: The new policy also states some optional components: The current policy touches on a few of these items, but does not go into great detail as to how to handle bullying after it is discovered among students. Members of every aspect of the community met in the gym at Boyd W. Arthurs for a dedication ceremony.

The biggest names in Trenton gathered together Thursday night to honor Boyd W. Arthurs Middle School for receiving the Schools to Watch dedication. Arthurs is one of only 13 other Michigan schools to be considered a Schools to Watch middle school and one of only 300 nationwide. Trenton leaders like Mayor Kyle Stack, School Board President Mike Hawkins and Jane Mackey, congressional aid for Rep. John Conyers, met in Arthurs' gymnasium to unveil a banner given to Arthurs after making the coveted list of Schools to Watch. Budget Projections Show Possible Continued Need for Schools of Choice in Trenton

Budget projections for the coming years leave Trenton Public Schools with a need for additional revenue.

Despite backlash from some Trenton Patch readers, Trenton Public Schools could potentially remain schools of choice indefinitely due to projected drops in enrollment and state funding. Mike Hawkins, president of the Trenton Board of Education, said a decision to continue limited open enrollment, after a one-year district commitment expires, would rely on a number of factors. "We want to examine it," Hawkins said. "We want to make sure it's working before we make it long term. We want to make sure that it's something that is a benefit to our district." Ron, the economy has much to do with cities and school districts looking at deficits. Also, the governor is helping out his business friends with money that is supposed to go to schools instead of looking out for the youngest citizens of our state. I guess he figures districts can just board up their windows like stores that go out of business.   more ›

Trenton School Board President Responds to Readers' Questions on Schools of Choice

Trenton Patch spoke with Trenton Board of Education President Mike Hawkins to clear the air about a few lingering questions regarding limited open enrollment.

Many Trenton Patch readers have been vocal about the Trenton Board of Education's recent decision to make Trenton a schools of choice district. Students from other districts are now allowed to attend Trenton schools for kindergarten and first and ninth grades. The district will accept up to 20 kindergartners, 10 first-graders and 30 ninth-graders. Since Monday's decision, readers have begun a heated conversation on Trenton Patch and the Trenton Patch Facebook page. Among the comments were issues regarding overcrowding, discipline, sports and taxes. sounds like if we don't have the kids to fill the classrooms we need to make cuts, every other industry had to make tough cuts to make them more competitive. staff how many teachers we need, not bring in kids to fill a quota and cash in the check. teachers are no different, its a job and thats all. maybe they need to implement a 30 and out rule for teachers and get rid of high paid teachers like …   more ›

Golden Apple Winner Gives Touching Speech

Trenton teacher Beth Stackpole is the new Golden Apple Award winner for Trenton Public Schools.

Fighting back tears, Beth Stackpole thanked her family, friends and students for helping her win the Golden Apple Award presented by Trenton Public Schools. Stackpole received the award in front of many of her family members at the regularly scheduled Trenton Board of Education meeting Monday. "I would be remiss in accepting this award on my own," Stackpole said. "My parents have been my rock...and they have raised me to have pride in myself and my community." Stackpole was nominated for her special attention to students' needs including taking time out for her students, as well as other teachers' students, and parents. Arthurs MS to Celebrate Schools to Watch Nomination

A party has been set to celebrate Boyd W. Arthurs Middle School's recent Schools to Watch nomination.

Administrators at Boyd W. Arthurs Middle School are getting things ready to celebrate being listed as a Schools to Watch by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform. The party is scheduled from 6:30 to 8 p.m. April 26 at Arthurs Middle School, with a banner unveiling at 7:30 p.m. Arthurs administrators like Principal Stephanie O'Conner applied for the designation in November 2011. The application process included an on-site visit by members of the national forum in January. Student art work will be on display throughout the building and guests can enjoy performances from the school chior and jazz band.
